2022 marks the 10th year of The Great British Entrepreneur Awards, and all of the talent and success we’ve seen over the last decade is definitely something worth celebrating. Last year alone we received 4800 entries, filled with amazing entrepreneurs, and we’re expecting that this year will be even bigger.
As we approach the 10 year anniversary, we’re taking a look back at some of our highly successful winners from over the years and discovering what winning The Great British Entrepreneur Awards meant to them and still to this day.
Previous Entrepreneur of the Year winner, and now a judge on our panel, Grenade’s Co-Founder and former Chief Marketing Officer, Juliet Barratt has had a fascinating career that has spanned education, charity and training, before succeeding in the world of marketing and sports nutrition, with the launch of market-leading sports performance and active nutrition brand, Grenade.
After stepping away from the day-to-day responsibilities of Grenade in 2019 she now works with many food brands, such as LoveRaw – one of our 2020 finalists. Juliet focuses her time on mentoring people in non-executive director roles, to help grow smaller businesses. This allows her to go back to her passion for education whilst being a part of some amazing businesses.
We caught up with Juliet to discuss what winning The Great British Entrepreneur Awards truly means, and find out what impact it’s had on her since winning. We find out what the future holds for Juliet, and some amazing advice she has for up and coming entrepreneurs.
What does being a Great British Entrepreneur Awards winner mean to you, and how has winning this award helped your business?
It’s a great honour to be recognised for entrepreneurial success, there are so many great businesses out there and we always try to do something slightly different and be really creative, and never follow the crowd. Being recognised for those things is truly an honour. Especially when you see if the other business who have won it as well who may even be bigger than Grenade.
You’re now a judge on the panel, so how does it feel to be giving back to the next generation of entrepreneurs, and what advice would you give to them?
I do a lot of work with entrepreneurs now, with a lot of SMEs in non-exec and director roles and the biggest piece of advice I would give is to always follow your gut instincts. We never set up Grenade to make money and I think that always stood us in good stead because we genuinely love the business and we love the journey – every day there are new challenges and opportunities. So I would say follow your gut, if you feel like something is worth it go for it! And if it doesn’t work out that’s okay too because you’ll learn from it and move on.
“I always think it’s good to be a “has been” than a never was. Entrepreneurs have got really good gut instincts so follow that.”
We’ve loved being a part of your business’s journey and are always excited to hear about your success. What can we expect next from you?
I am now working with several food brands that are on The Great British Entrepreneur programme. It’s really exciting to help businesses grow, the ones that are being entered for these awards are at a really exciting stage of their journey, and there are a lot of challenges, e.g. growing their team, expanding their product range, and expanding distribution – so it’s great being involved with these businesses. I would never say never to doing another business because nothing beats the feeling of coming up with an idea and developing something … so watch this space.
