To celebrate Independent Retailer Month, with the help of our partners SumUp we’re spending July highlighting some incredible independent retail entrepreneurs.
SumUp helps small businesses to get paid, whether they’re starting up or leveling up, supporting entrepreneurs to make their business ‘oOOooficial’.
Business name: The Bead Shop
Founded by: Hana Glover
Launched in: 2000
You can find them: Market Street in Nottingham, and online at mailorder-beads.co.uk
The Bead Shop is a bead, craft and jewellery shop in Nottingham city centre. It sources the best locally produced coffee, teas and cakes to enjoy whilst crafting. Its friendly staff are on hand to help with any tips or technical know-how whilst customers enjoy the cafe area. The Bead Shop hosts a huge range of workshops as well as fixing jewellery and selling online.
When did you switch the business from a hobby or side hustle into an oOOoofficial business?
It’s always been an official business, I went in with both feet & opened a shop when I was just 18!
What are your hopes for the business post-Covid?
To build our community of customers and get to know them all better (hopefully over coffee & cake!). I also want to grow the craft kit and workshop side of the business.
What’s the best thing about being an independent retailer?
That no two days are the same and I can change things really quickly; we’ve just opened a small cafe area in our shop so customers can have a cuppa whilst crafting – this wasn’t even on the cards pre-Covid!
Being a small business, how have you benefitted from digital transformation?
It means we can keep in touch with customers wherever they’re located, and teach workshops virtually when geography or lockdowns get in the way.
