To celebrate Independent Retailer Month, with the help of our partners SumUp we’re spending July highlighting some incredible independent retail entrepreneurs.
SumUp helps small businesses to get paid, whether they’re starting up or leveling up, supporting entrepreneurs to make their business ‘oOOooficial’.
Country Designs by Lisa makes fine silver and gold vermeil plated nature-inspired jewellery, taking inspiration from both the countryside and the sea.
When did you switch the business from a hobby or side hustle into an oOOoofficial business?
In August 2017 I switched to a small business from just a hobby. Then in March 2019, I realised people wanted to buy my jewellery and were coming back for more so I rebranded and elevated my business. In September 2019, I gave up a part-time job to focus on my business full-time which has paid off.
What are your hopes for the business post-Covid?
I’m hoping I can start selling at a few more high-end craft fairs as well as teaching more Silver Clay workshops. I’m also hoping my online sales carry on increasing especially on my British Craft House shop, which has been going from strength to strength.
What’s the best thing about being an independent retailer?
Being able to work for myself doing something I love and being there for my two children.
Being a small business, how have you benefitted from digital transformation?
Being part of The British Craft House online selling platform has enabled me to sell online quickly and easily and be part of a wonderful high-quality community. I do have my own website but it’s not easy getting sales online, so being part of a larger online ‘shop’ has really given me a platform with lots more customers spread out across the country and what is becoming a global reach. It is allowing my brand to be seen by others, this is very hard to do on your own website.
