Each month we celebrate a member of the GBEA community who has shown incredible entrepreneurial spirit. For their efforts, they’ll receive a bottle of both Double Cask and Victoriana single malt Scotch whiskies, courtesy of our partners, Glen Scotia Single Malt Whisky.
And we’re delighted to announce that December’s winner is Jeff Smith, co-founder of Bigmoose Coffee Co!
Bigmoose Coffee Co is a charity and non-profit cafe and restaurant in Cardiff that aims to “leave the world a better place than we found it” by raising money to tackle homelessness, mental health and suicide problems.
With more than 5,000 lives lost to suicide in England and Wales in 2020, Bigmoose has launched its largest ever project, Project 1 Million, which will see the organisation commit to providing more therapy and timely, effective early intervention for those at risk of suicide and provide much better support for those with mental health issues. As part of the project, Bigmoose is aiming to raise £1 million to help mental health support services, provide training for businesses to better support the mental health of their teams and reduce homelessness.
Jeff won the national Entrepreneurial Spirit Award in 2019 alongside his daughter and business partner, Chloe, having won the same award at the Wales regional final.
Iain McAlister, distillery manager at Glen Scotia Single Malt Scotch Whisky, said: “Bigmoose Coffee Company’s ethos is one which we can all get behind, as Jeff and his team work to raise £1million next year to support access to mental health services. While there are many miles between us, Glen Scotia and Bigmoose share those important values of community spirit and collaboration. Well done to the team on a very well-deserved award win.”
