Iain McAlister, Distillery Manager and Master Distiller at Glen Scotia, is responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the distillery. He works with the team to deliver the highest possible standards of quality control, keeping a close eye on our whisky as it matures quietly in our warehouse. His many years of experience in the industry have allowed him to develop a keen sense of what makes an excellent dram, so much of his time is spent sampling different years, cask types and finishes, to create the perfect Glen Scotia Single Malt Whisky.
Coming from the ‘whiskiest place in the world’, Iain says that whisky is in his veins. Born in Campbeltown in 1967, he spent time working as a fisherman before moving into engineering, but he always had an interest rooted in whisky.
He cemented this in 2008, when he joined Glen Scotia Distillery as Assistant Manager. It didn’t take long for Ian to make his mark, drawing on his engineering background and innovative spirit to enhance production at the distillery, as he quickly progressed into his current role as Distillery Manager, and Master Distiller a decade later.
His work and dedication have seen the distillery team, and Glen Scotia whisky, grow both in numbers and volume. From a team of just three, Glen Scotia Distillery now employs nine staff, each one preserving the craftsmanship, tradition and rich history of Glen Scotia, and Iain’s work has seen production increased from 80,000 litres to 520,000 litres per year.
A proud ambassador for the Glen Scotia Distillery and its whiskies, he leads tours and tastings for visitors from all over the world – helping to keep Glen Scotia, one of the last surviving distilleries from Campbeltown’s whisky heyday, on the map, safeguarding its legacy for future generations.
