Ed Molyneux is the CEO and co-founder of FreeAgent.
After completing his degree in Engineering and Computer Science, Ed spent a decade flying military fast jets in the RAF before taking the plunge into freelance IT consultancy in 2003. However, he found that trying to balance his books armed only with a spreadsheet was a painful process, and decided that freelancers needed a simpler and more intuitive way to manage their accounts.
The result was FreeAgent, which Ed went on to co-found in 2007 with the aim of democratising accounting for micro-businesses and to help them work better with their accountants. The company started life in Edinburgh as a three-man operation, but has now grown to more than 100 staff and is the market leader in cloud accounting specifically designed for freelancers, contractors, micro-businesses and the accountants who work with them.
Under Ed’s leadership, FreeAgent has received investment from influential business figures in Europe and the USA – including a £1.2m crowdfunding round in 2015. In 2016, the company successfully floated on London’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM) and it has recently agreed a partnership with the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) Group.
FreeAgent has won top awards at the British Accountancy Awards and AccountingWEB Software Satisfaction Awards. The company is a FCSA partner and has been listed twice in the Deloitte Fast 50 – the annual list highlighting the fastest-growing technology companies in the UK – as well as being named as “one to watch” in the Tech Track 100 and by Forbes magazine.
Since November 2016, FreeAgent Holdings plc (AIM: FREE), has been a quoted company listed on AIM, a market operated by the London Stock Exchange.
